SAP certifies SWAN Layer for Clean Core with S/4HANA Cloud

SWAN relies on Clean Core-compliant SAP EWM extensions for long-term upgradability and predictable upgrades

November 11, 2025 – The SWAN Layer from SWAN GmbH, a project house for SAP logistics, meets SAP’s Clean Core criteria and is listed as “SAP-Certified for clean core with SAP S/4HANA Cloud.” The SWAN Layer is a modular extension layer for SAP Extended Warehouse Management (EWM) that implements customer-specific functions close to the standard. For SWAN customers, the certification means upgradable extensions in SAP EWM with smooth upgrades and lower maintenance effort. The certification also strengthens SWAN’s strategic alignment with the SAP S/4HANA product strategy and ensures the long-term viability of SAP EWM solutions.

Customer value and strategic alignment

Using the SWAN Layer, SWAN develops extensions to SAP EWM functionalities in accordance with Clean Core. This means additional logic is clearly separated from the SAP standard, which ensures the compatibility of the extensions. This keeps implementations release-compatible and predictable: upgrades can be carried out with manageable effort, existing SAP EWM functions can continue to be used and selectively expanded. The close alignment with SAP’s strategy ensures that customer-specific extensions remain stable, low-maintenance, and close to the standard in the long term.

SWAN Layer at a glance

The SWAN Layer is a modular, ABAP-based extension for SAP EWM. It clearly maps core EWM objects such as handling unit, storage bin, warehouse task, resource, batch, and delivery, and provides reusable building blocks for them. This reduces development complexity: error handling and logging are centrally organized, the code remains concise, understandable, and close to the SAP standard. Following the Pareto principle, the SWAN Layer focuses on the most frequently required core topics, thereby accelerating customer projects. This simplifies the start of project development for both SWAN and SWAN customers and ensures greater efficiency and reliability in programming.

Clean Core in the SAP EWM context

SAP S/4HANA forms the digital core; Clean Core stands for standard-close, decoupled, and upgradable extensions. The SWAN Layer supports this approach and enables adjustments that safeguard upgradability and quality standards without changing the core. This preserves compatibility with upcoming S/4HANA releases and cloud innovations.

Certification and availability

The certification was finalized between late June and late September 2025 and confirmed as “Conditional Clean Core” (Level C). SWAN Layer version 2.0 is listed in the SAP Certified Solutions Directory (one of currently 23 solutions in the “Clean Core” category).
