SWAN optimizes manufacturing processes with SAP DM

SWAN Drives Digital Transformation through Data-Driven Operations

Augsburg, September 25, 2024 – SWAN GmbH, a leading project house for SAP logistics, is expanding its portfolio with the SAP Digital Manufacturing (SAP DM) module. This innovative cloud-based solution connects SAP logistics solutions with production, optimizing warehouse and manufacturing processes. The direct integration of machines with SAP DM enables data-driven operations for more efficient and streamlined production and logistics processes.

With SAP DM, SAP has developed a modern Software-as-a-Service solution specifically tailored to the requirements of Industry 4.0. The cloud-based solution integrates seamlessly into existing SAP systems, allowing real-time generation, monitoring, and analysis of production data. This enables companies to maximize productivity in manufacturing and respond quickly to changes. The generated data also helps optimize processes in warehouse logistics and supply chain management, paving the way for the Smart Factory.

“Digital transformation is a significant challenge for many manufacturing companies. By implementing SAP DM, we help them streamline production, improve material flows, and respond more quickly to market demands,” says Matthias Ebert, Senior SAP SCM Consultant at SWAN GmbH. “The solution not only helps optimize manufacturing processes but also helps mitigate the skilled labor shortage,” Ebert adds.

A Software Solution Against the Skilled Labor Shortage

Data-driven operations using real-time machine data free up personnel resources by eliminating the need for manual data entry, reducing errors caused by human intervention. The software is independent of vacation times, resignations, or shift work. As a result, companies can deploy their existing skilled workforce more effectively, maintaining high levels of productivity and quality in manufacturing.

Staying Ahead with AI Tools

SAP customers using the SAP Cloud benefit from the latest technological developments such as artificial intelligence, real-time evaluations, or the SAP Analytics Cloud. For on-premise customers in manufacturing, an early investment in SAP DM can be worthwhile, as the cloud-based solution offers AI functionalities without requiring a full S/4 transformation. This improves quality management and ensures cost advantages, as algorithms can detect anomalies during the production process and optimize operations accordingly.

SWAN Experts Create Synergies Between Manufacturing and Warehousing

A key advantage of SAP DM is its seamless integration with other SAP modules, such as SAP Enterprise Resource Planning (SAP ERP), SAP Embedded Warehouse Management (SAP EWM), and SAP Transportation Management (SAP TM). This close interconnection allows companies to precisely control their warehouse and transportation processes, preventing bottlenecks in supply chain management.

“Thanks to our extensive experience in intralogistics, especially with SAP EWM and SAP TM, SWAN is a competent partner in the implementation of SAP DM,” emphasizes Ebert. “In addition to deep technical expertise in software, machinery, and equipment, we also bring a strong understanding of production and logistics processes. This ensures that our customers receive the optimal configuration for their individual use cases.”

Simple and Step-by-Step Implementation

SWAN follows a multi-stage process for implementing SAP DM, starting with a proof of concept. SWAN takes into account both the customer’s machinery fleet and existing IT architecture. While SAP DM is a cloud-based module, it can already be used with the SAP Cloud Connector, even if other SAP applications are still running on-premise. This approach is advantageous for those who want to benefit from SAP’s cloud solution advantages, such as AI and real-time data analysis, while postponing a full S/4 transformation. Thanks to its cloud-based architecture, SAP DM can be rolled out step by step globally and adapted to various locations. This flexible and customizable deployment is tailored directly to the needs of the company.

To fully leverage the benefits for businesses, SWAN offers training at the start of the implementation process. Additionally, employees are involved early on to better consider internal workflows and specific requirements.

First Projects with Partner Companies

To build the SAP DM division, SWAN is relying on close collaboration with companies from the SSI SCHÄFER Group and other partner firms. Experts from different companies work together on customer projects. Both customers and partners benefit from this knowledge exchange. “SAP DM was only introduced by SAP in 2022, so professionals specializing solely in SAP DM are still rare in the market,” notes Ebert. “Through cross-company collaboration, we ensure that these experts are developed. This way, SAP customers get the most out of their investment in SAP DM.”
