Project House for SAP Logistics Looks Back on a Successful Company History

Augsburg, September 28, 2021 – SWAN GmbH has reason to celebrate: the project house for SAP logistics is celebrating its tenth company anniversary this year. Founded as a small start-up in 2011 in Stadtbergen near Augsburg, SWAN has grown into an internationally operating company with eight locations. The latest milestone was the acquisition of the SAP division of the SSI Schäfer Group under Managing Director Alexander Bernhard, who has been on board since the very beginning. At a grand celebration at the elegant Dauphin Speed Event in Hersbruck, over 120 employees toasted to a successful decade. The celebration was an occasion for the managing director to look back on the successes and special experiences, as well as to honor long-term employees. He presented gifts to 20 employees with five to ten years of company service.

The long-term and sustainable success of a start-up often rests not only on the idea of an individual but on the commitment and conviction of an entire team. In the case of SWAN, a 16-member team was involved in founding the company. The experienced founding team wanted to break out of conservative corporate structures in 2011 and build a company where employees are the focus, and a modern working environment, flat hierarchies, high team spirit, and open communication are truly lived. The success of this approach quickly became apparent at SWAN: employees and customers appreciate the dynamism, values, and the resulting agile SWAN project methodology. As a result, SWAN has grown from an initial 16 employees to 120 employees at eight locations in Germany and Austria and has successfully implemented numerous SAP logistics projects for companies of various industries and sizes.

“Even after ten years, we live the drive of our initial start-up with forward-thinking and high degrees of freedom for our employees. Added to this is the matured experience and deep expert knowledge in the SAP modules EWM and TM. These are ideal conditions for realizing tailor-made, individual SAP solutions for our national and international customers,” says Alexander Bernhard. “We currently have over 116 active customers in 26 countries. Even after a project is completed, we remain closely connected with our customer base through the Customer Lifecycle – SWAN maintains long-lasting, sustainable partnerships, and 46 companies continue to use our customer service.”

Milestones and Company History

The SWAN success story began in 2011 with the company’s founding in Stadtbergen near Augsburg and with the two branches in Nuremberg and Wächtersbach. The order books steadily filled, and the young company achieved a positive result in its first fiscal year. In 2013, SWAN had customer projects on three continents. Milestones in 2014 included the development of a SAP EWM add-on for tugger trains and a material flow solution for automated systems in SAP LES/WM. A year later, a specialist team was already implementing SAPUI5/FIORI applications in intralogistics, from goods receipt to picking to loading. SWAN continued to expand, and it was time to open another location. In 2017, Altenstadt an der Waldnaab in Upper Palatinate was added as the fourth branch.

The expansion of the SWAN portfolio continued. In 2018, the logistics expert added self-developed, standardized SAP logistics add-ons in the IoT field to its offerings. To be able to provide IT and digitalization specialists outside the SAP focus, SWAN founded SWAN Consultancy GmbH as a subsidiary in 2019. The following year, the company focused on optimizing and further developing a differentiated SWAN project methodology for the agile implementation of logistics projects.

In its tenth anniversary year, the most significant milestone in the company’s history occurred: to consolidate their SAP expertise, SWAN and the industry giant SSI Schäfer Group entered into a strategic partnership. SWAN integrated all employees of the SAP business unit from SSI Schäfer in Dortmund, Giebelstadt, Walldorf, and Graz, Austria, into the company.

Alexander Bernhard draws a satisfied conclusion: “We look back on ten exciting and eventful years, on ten years of self-determined work in an innovative SAP logistics environment, exciting automation projects, and long nights of commissioning. I thank all the employees for their outstanding performance and tireless efforts in developing a great company. Without them, SWAN would not have been able to write this success story.”
